New organisation: Introducing Four Strategic Research Sections
The department of computer Science is consolidating its eight research groups into four new research sections. This is to strengthen both internal and external collaboration, to sharpen our research profile, and to support long-term development. This restructuring reflects both the natural evolution of our research activities and our ambition to address major scientific and societal challenges. Each of the sections will become an umbrella over several new research groups.

"This new organisation allows us to think bigger and collaborate more effectively across our tightly coupled disciplines. It gives us the clarity and momentum we need to lead in an increasingly complex university landscape, with multiple agendas regarding research, education and societal impact" says Head of Department Kaj Grønbæk.
The four new sections are:
Algorithms, Data and Artificial Intelligence
Spanning theoretical computer science to applied AI and machine learning, this section studies complex problems in data science, optimization, and the mathematical foundations of computation. The research has applications in diverse areas such as computational aspects of economics, healthcare and climate modelling. Head of section: Prof. Kasper Green Larsen
Cryptography and Cybersecurity
Focusing on cryptographic protocols, secure computation, and data privacy, this section tackles fundamental challenges in protecting digital systems. Researchers develop methods to protect sensitive information, enable trustworthy digital interactions, and ensure the integrity of systems in a world increasingly reliant on data and connectivity. Head of section: Prof. Claudio Orlandi
Human-Centered Computing
Placing people at the core of digital technology, this section combines research in human-computer interaction, ubiquitous computing, and collaborative systems. The aim is to create digital solutions that are not only functional, but also inclusive, ethical, and attuned to human needs and practices.
Head of section: Prof. Niklas Elmqvist
Programming Languages, Logic and Software Security
Focussed on the fundamental principles of software, this section unites work on the design and semantics of programming languages, formal methods, and software security. Researchers develop tools and theories to ensure the reliability and correctness of software systems across all levels of complexity. Head of section: Prof. Lars Birkedal
The four sections represent a forward-looking organisation that builds on the strengths of our existing research groups but also gives more visibility to emerging subtopics. By aligning related areas and strengthening synergies, we are creating a strong foundation for continued excellence, recruitment, and impact across science, industry, and society.
Our researchers will continue to shape the global research agenda in computer science. With the new sections in place, we are better positioned to grow our excellence, develop strategic partnerships, and educate the next generation of computer scientists in a dynamic, world-class research environment.
Extended management team
Moving forward, the departments extended management team will consist of: Head of department Kaj Grønbæk, Deputy Head of Education Marianne Graves Petersen, Deputy Head of Research Anders Møller, Head of Secretariat Lene Hjøllund and the four new Head of Sections Kasper Green Larsen, Claudio Orlandi, Niklas Elmqvist and Lars Birkedal.
