Lars Arge new chairman of The Danish Council for Independent Research, Natural Sciences
As of January 1st, 2017, Lars Arge is the new chairman of The Danish Council for Independent Research, Natural Sciences. Lars Arge has been a member of the council since January 2013 and vice-chair since January 2015.
Professor Lars Arge from Aarhus University has been appointed chairman of The Danish Council for Independent Research, Natural Sciences, succeeding Professor Lone Gram from Technical University of Denmark. He is a professor of Computer Science and center leader for the Danish National Research Foundation Center for Massive Data Algorithmics (MADALGO).
"I am very honored to have been elected chairman of the council and take on the role with great deal of respect for the council's work. The council receives far more excellent project proposals than we can support, and the council members work very hard to select the projects that are funded," says Lars Arge.
The research interests of Lars Arge lie in the area of algorithms and data structures with focus on memory-hierarchy efficient algorithms, especially I/O-efficient algorithms for problems involving massive datasets (big data).
Lars Arge obtained his PhD from Aarhus University in 1996, and spend the following years as faculty at Duke University in the US before returned to Denmark in 2004. He is a recipient of the Danish Elite Research ("EliteForsk") award, a Fellow of the Association of Computing Machinery, and an elected member of the Royal Danish Academy of Science and Letters and the Danish Academy of Technical Sciences. Since November 2016 he has also served as the Secretary General of the Royal Danish Academy of Science and Letters.
Apart from his scientific career, Lars Arge is the co-founder and chairman of the company Scalable Algorithmics (SCALGO) that markets software and services in connection with efficient processing of massive terrain data in general and flood risk analysis in particular.
