55 Girls Replace their Autumn Break with Design and Programming
For the 13th year in a row, the Department of Computer Science, Aarhus University (AU) organize the annual IT Camp for girls in the autumn break, and the seats are in high demand. Although several other universities offer similar programs, this year there has been a record high number of applicants for the offer from AU.
A total of 55 girls have been offered a seat at this year's camp, and it has been necessary to create a waiting list, as several others wish to spend their autumn break learning more about programming, new digital technology and design.
Head of Department and Professor Kaj Grønbæk is pleased with the great interest in IT Camp for Girls: "It is very pleasant that there is an increasing interest in IT camp for Girls. We have too few women in our study programs today, and the business community demands more candidates. Therefore, we hope that an increasing number of girls develop a taste for more and choose to study here after being introduced to the courses. With an education in Computer Science or IT Product Development, you can count on getting a job. At the same time, you will get the best prerequisites in order to invent and design good IT solutions for the future so as to meet society's major challenges”.
During the IT Camp, the girls will be acquainted with the department’s two programs, Computer Science and IT Product Development, through lectures, exercises, company visits and workshops where they will be programming LEGO Mindstorms as well as their own Pac-Man game.
Student volunteers from both educations at the department (Computer Science and IT Product Development) organize the IT Camp for Girls, which takes place from 17-19 October 2018 at the Department of Computer Science.
