Based on a review of ten years of participatory design research published as full research papers at the Participatory Design Conference (PDC) during 2002–2012 we have investigated the diversity of participatory design research practice and positioned this body of research in relation to selected parts of classic participatory design literature. We have identified five main categories of research contributions: Issues in Participatory Design, Participatory Design in new domains, Participatory Design methods, Participatory Design and new technology, and Theoretical contributions to Participatory Design. Moreover, we have identified how participation is defined and how participation is conducted in experimental design cases, with a particular focus on interpretation, planning and decision-making in the design process.
