Abstract: The talk will discuss possible relationships between Visual Analytics and cyber security, listing hot application fields and tickling the dichotomy that recently we are witnessing between machine learning and Visual Analytics. Practical use cases and prototypes will be demonstrated together with some research activities carried on at University of Rome. The talk will conclude with a discussion on the emerging Progressive Visual Analytics research field, showing pros and cons associated with such an approach.

Bio: Giuseppe Santucci is Associate Professor at Sapienza, University of Rome, where he teaches courses on Computer Architectures, C, and Visual Analytics. He coordinates the A.WA.RE  Advanced Visualization & Visual Analytics REsearch group and his main research activities concern Human Computer Interaction, Visualization, Progressive and Non-Progressive Visual Analytics, and Cyber Security. On such topics, he published more than 200 papers on international journals and conferences. In these fields, he served as reviewer for the most important conferences and journals, and he is a member of the VAST Steering Committee, EuroVis Steering Committee, and AVI Steering Committee. In his free time, he is an avid sailor, motorcycle rider, and glider pilot – and he likes to write about it. His books include “700 hours in India” chronicling his motorcycle ride from the source of the Ganges to the Rajasthan deserts, as well as the quintessential “To BErnoulli or not to BErnoulli, that is, do we really need Bernoulli to fly?”
