All offices have at least one computer connected to our net. There really is no difference between computers located in offices and computers in our public computer rooms, except that the office computers are meant for use by the people in the office and not others.
This means that some of the office machines have restrictions on who are allowed to login. If you are a new guest at the department and the computer in your office refuses to let you login this is a very likely cause.
