Meet Panagiotis Karras - new Associate Professor at Department of Computer Science
At Department of Computer Science Panagiotis Karras has joined the research group on Data-Intensive Systems, where he will do research in data management, mining, and security. Friday Oct. 6th 14.15-15.00, he will do his inaugural lecture in Peter Bøgh Andersen Auditorium.
For many years, Panagiotis Karras has been working on techniques for the management of data. His line of work introduces algorithms and systems that cater to efficiency, succinctness, privacy, integrity, and adaptability requirements in data access and representation. At the Department of Computer Science, Aarhus University, Panagiotis Karras has joined the research group on Data-Intensive Systems. Here he will do research, among others, on techniques to extract knowledge and value from social graphs and information graphs:
– More and more information on the internet is expressed in graph format, and there is a great potential to derive knowledge and gain value from it. Recently I have begun work of research with colleagues around the world on new techniques to represent, explore, and exploit information graphs, so that the data becomes easily manageable and accessible to users. My research also has a focus on data privacy, as I have also worked on techniques that help data owners share their data in a form that does not threaten the privacy of individuals involved, says Panagiotis Karras.
Panagiotis Karras earned a Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Hong Kong in 2007 and a M.Eng. in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the National Technical University of Athens in 1999. He has published over 50 research articles and received over 1700 citations. In 2008 he was awarded the Hong Kong Young Scientist Award.
He has also been supported by Singapore’s Lee Kuan Yew Endowment and has worked with the MIT Skoltech Initiative. He regularly serves as a program committee member and referee for the major international conferences and journals in data management.
Prior to his position as Associate Professor at Department of Computer Science, he was Associate Professor at the University of Aalborg. He has also held positions at the Skolkovo Institute of Science and Technology, Rutgers Business School, the National University of Singapore, the University of Zurich, and the Technical University of Denmark.
Panagiotis Karras, 42, is of Greek origin and has lived in Aalborg during the past year. He is married and has two children (9 and 15).
